Matthew Thomas, EMBA 2024
I just wanted to share the amazing experience of the recent international study tour with my UTD Executive MBA cohort. This trip, divided between Munich and Prague, was an invaluable capstone to the last 18 months of the EMBA program. It was an academically, professionally, and personally enriching adventure. It reinforced the program curriculum enormously – particularly global strategy and operations management.
Starting off in Munich, we had an incredible cultural tour of the city. It is impressive how Munich was so beautifully rebuilt after being mostly destroyed in WWII. The remainder of our stay in Bavaria included visits to Audi, BMW, Texas Instruments, KPMG, and the famous Hofbrau Brewery (where we, of course, did quality assurance testing 😉). These site visits included insightful executive presentations and manufacturing process tours. My favorite tour was the Audi production line in Ingolstadt, walking the entire line from where the body is molded to where an A4 is driven off the assembly line – 80% robotic automation. Overall, it was awesome to witness German engineering prowess, efficiency, and celebratory culture.
The last half of the trip was to the most beautiful and romantic city I’ve ever seen: Prague, Czech Republic. Here we toured and had discussions with Johnson & Johnson Global Services, American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), and Pilsner Urquell. We were enlightened by a sobering overview of the geopolitical and economic climate of Eastern Europe. Globalization has always seemed like a foregone conclusion, but it is incredibly complex and can easily contract with world-changing events.
I am fortunate to have traveled the world for business and leisure, but this study tour was top notch. It was well-executed and exceeded my expectations.
